Daycare Centre Incursions
“The basic law of children’s creativity is that it’s value lies not in its results, not in the product of the creation but in the process itself” – Vygotsky.
With this in mind, Creative Workroom offers an art program designed to complement the child education curriculum by introducing process art in group settings. Creative Workroom will offer a service that inspires creativity rather than following a set formula. It encourages sustainability through its use of recycled materials and ethical waste management and enables children to learn how to think rather that what to think.
Art Enrichment for Kindy is an in-service program where I come in and run an art experience within a room where Educators can assist and take observations for their own documentation. These are priced at $7 per student.
Child care centres offering art education to their families are adding value to their service, thus adding a point of difference to their business. Centres can book one off art days or blocks to ensure consistent time planning. Educators are able to incorporate the art lesson time into their program and utilise the learning opportunities in the documentation. Loris Malaguzzi says “Creativity becomes more visible when adults try to be more attentive to the cognitive processes of children than to the results they achieve in various fields of doing and understanding.” Through art, children can build confidence, learn to see problems as opportunities, persevere through many challenges learn that they must focus to achieve goals, see that communication is more than just words and collaborate with others
After working with Child Care Educators for several years, it became apparent that while many were confident finding and presenting art activities and linking to the EYLF, nearly half strongly agreed that an art program should be introduced into their centre. Most spent their own money on art supplies - some spending up to $500/year. Most liked the idea of an art educator coming in to run a specialised class in their centre and agreed that parents would see the benefit too.
